Abstract


The cigarette smoking may act directly on the oral mucosal membrane. The effects of smoking has many harmful effects on the oral cavity, such as oral cancer, oral leukoplakia, erythroplakia, nicotine stomatitis, hairy tongue, smoker¡¯s melanosis, acute necrotizing ulverative gingivitis, gingivitis/periodontitis, treatment of periodontitis, implant surgery and dental caries. If pregnant woman smokes, the tobacco can effect on the both pregnant and embryo/fetus negatively. For the cessation of smoking, the dentists have an important role to play in preventing the harmful effects on smoking in the oral cavity. Consequently smoking counseling should be as a part of the dentist¡¯s job in the dental practice.
